Reading section is one of the toughest parts in IELTS. If you want to score better in IELTS reading, you will have to follow the right tips and tricks. It will further cause to improve the chances of your success. It will also require your time, efforts, and practice.

  • Time Management

You must know how to manage your time during IELTS reading tasks to make the most of it. You will receive a booklet with all questions and an answer sheet to record your answers in it. It is better if you don’t waste your time in writing all the answers in the booklet first. So, you must fill in the answer sheet directly while having the booklet in front of you. Also, you should leave the difficult questions for the end. You can also practise reading tests to be able to manage your time effectively.

  • Vocabulary

Don’t panic if you see any unknown word in the text. It is good to have a better vocabulary but a lot of people tend to forget that it is not a vocabulary test. So, don’t waste your time by searching for every word you don’t know. You can still try to understand the meaning of the sentence without knowing every single word in it. Also, don’t use the dictionary while practising for the reading test as it won’t be allowed in the exam.

  • Skim & Scan

You should learn to skim and scan the passage carefully if you want to do well in IELTS. Skimming will help you get a general idea about the written text. You can underline the important words or points while skimming to save your time later. However, it shouldn’t take more than 3 to 4 minutes. Then you can shift to scanning the paragraph to find the required information quickly.

  • Read Carefully

Reading tasks can also be tricky. If you want to avoid any mistake, you should pay attention to details to understand the task properly. You must start by reading the instructions carefully first. For instance, if you select true among ‘True’, ‘False, and ‘Not given’ options, the whole sentence must be true. If half of the sentence is true and the other half is false, you should choose the false option. That’s where a lot of students lose marks.

  • Reading Speed

Your reading speed will determine how many marks you are going to score in IELTS reading. The only way to get better at it is by practicing it every day. You can turn it into a fun activity by reading comic books, novels, or any sort of text that you would love to read. Also, try to record your time to ensure you get faster every day. Other than your favorite reading sources, you must also practice reading the articles that are complex and lengthy like IELTS text. The right training and practice can do wonders for your reading skills.
