Sample Essay On Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech is the right of every individual or group to present their opinions without being punished or penalized. There shouldn’t be any hindrances when it comes to express your thoughts or ideas. Since the ability of verbal speech is gifted by God, it must be used in a positive way to make impactful differences in the world. Regardless of the medium used, the act of sharing and forwarding information must not be prohibited by any of the governments.

Democracy is also based on the rights which are given to people to express their point of views and thoughts. Not a single nation or country can make progress in the world without granting such rights to its natives or citizens. It helps them make important decisions in life and take necessary actions further. If the authorities don’t protect the basic rights of people, it would cause to promote unrest in society as a whole. However, it is important to provide this freedom to people but to a certain extent. Anything in excess or without limitations can also end up causing disastrous consequences.

Freedom of speech also helps keep a check and balance on the legislation of a country. When the people of a country are free to speak against injustice or any other immoral act, the laws will be made after being examined properly. On the other hand, if the public is not free, it is highly likely that leaders or politicians are going to take advantage of the system. Moreover, freedom of speech helps people feel secure and protected in their countries. They have the right to express their emotions and feelings by casting votes for a particular political party they like. Even a lot of community decisions are then based on democratic views and opinions. Once people have awareness about their rights related to freedom of speech, they are also capable of protesting if someone tries to snatch their rights from them.

On the other hand, a lot of people argue that freedom of speech has made everything complicated. Since it is not possible to please everyone at the same time, it only results in chaos, conflicts, and disputes. Moreover, it makes the political and economic system of a country inactive as it cannot change based on different opinions coming from multiple individuals or groups. However, this problem can be solved easily by taking public opinion into account only for certain matters like education and health whereas other critical issues like national security must be kept confidential and unclassified. So, there is no justification for not providing people with their freedom of rights because they are born with the liberty of their voice.

In a nutshell, people may have different perceptions, thought processes, and ideas but it is the responsibility of the policymakers to keep them up to date especially when they take decisions on the behalf of the public. Also, they should take different historical and cultural factors into account to accept speeches that are legally, morally, and socially correct.
